大 勝 、 有 多 少 ？

報 紙 標 題 有 won big 這 說 法 ， 內 文 則 說 某 人 won big victories （ 取 得 大 勝 ） 。 那 won big 說 法 正 不 正 確 ？

Big 一 般 是 形 容 詞 （ adjective ） ， 修 飾 名 詞 ， 例 如 He won big victories 的 big 是形 容 victory ； 不 過 ， big 也 可 作 副 詞 （ adverb ） ， 修 飾 動 詞 ， 意 思 是 in a big way （ 大 大 地 ） ， 多 用 於 口 頭 英 語 ， 常 見 的 說 法 有 to talk big （ 誇 言 ） 、 to think big （ 眼 光 遠 大 ） 、 to look big （ 一 副 自 大 樣 子 ） 等 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） If you want to succeed, you must think big （ 你 要 成 功 ， 眼 光 就 要 大 ） 。 （ 2 ） I failed, and I failed big （ 我 失 敗 了 ， 大 大 的 失 敗 了 ） 。 To win big 無 非 to win big victories 的 通 俗 說 法 。

How many books are there on the shelf? （ 架 上 有 多 少 本 書 ？ ） 這 一 句 ， 改 為 轉 述 問 句 （ indirect question ） ，老 師 說 是 He asked how many books are on the shelf ， 但 不 是 應 改 為 He asked how many books there are on the shelf 嗎 ？

英 文 可 以 說 Books are on the shelf ， 也 可 以 說 There are books on the shelf ， 但 第 一 句 說 起 來 很 不 自然 ， 一 般 人 不 會 說 。 初 次 提 及 或 未 能 明 確 界 定 的 人 、 物 ， 英 文 習 慣 用 there 帶 出 ，例 如 Is anyone waiting ？ （ 有 沒 有 人 在 等 候 ？ ） 、 No one is in the room （ 房間 沒 有 人 ） 等 ， 改 說 Is there anyone waiting ？ 以 及 There is no one in the room 會 自 然 一 點 。

同樣 ， 你 可 以 說 How many books are on the shelf ？ 以 及 I asked how many books are on the shelf ， 但 加 there 一 字 會 自 然 一 點 ： How many books are there on the shelf ？ 以 及 I asked how many books there are on the shelf 。
