Nearly lost amid the World War II retrospectives is a postwar prank that literally had Japan's vanquished military leader chewing on the words: "Remember Pearl Harbor."

Jack Mallory, a draftee American dentist, drilled the message in Morse code into General Hideki Tojo's dentures while the general was imprisoned in occupied Japan. The dots and dashes remained for three months before the secret got out and they had to be removed.

第 二 次 世 界 大 戰 回 憶 錄 之 中 ， 有 一 個 戰 後 玩 笑 幾 乎 被 遺 忘 了 。 那 玩 笑 是 要 戰 敗 的 日 軍 首 領 切 切 實 實 咀 嚼 「 毋 忘 珍 珠 港 」 這 句 話 。

東條 英 機 將 軍 在 盟 軍 佔 領 的 日 本 國 土 上 監 禁 期 間 ， 徵 召 入 伍 的 美 國 牙 醫 傑 克 ． 馬 洛 里把 這 句 話 用 摩 爾 斯 信 號 鑽 在 東 條 英 機 的 假 牙 上 。 過 了 三 個 月 ， 這 秘 密 曝 光 了 ， 那 些點 、 線 構 成 的 信 號 才 被 除 去 。

【 附 注 】 東 條 英 機 是 日 本 戰 時 首 相 ， 日 軍 一 九 四 一 年 十 二 月 七 日 偷 襲 珍 珠 港 ， 就 是 由 他 策 劃 。 戰 後 ， 他 被 遠 東 國 際 軍 事 法 庭 判 處 絞 刑 。

Chew on 是 「 反 覆 的 啃 」 ， 常 用 來 比 喻 「 仔 細 思 量 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） The dog was happily chewing on a bone （ 那 隻 狗 啃 骨 頭 啃 得 很 高 興 ） 。 （ 2 ） You had better chew on this problem （ 這 問 題 你 最 好 仔 細 想 想 ） 。 馬 洛 里 把 「 毋 忘 珍 珠港 」 鑽 在 東 條 英 機 的 假 牙 上 ， 名 副 其 實 是 要 他 「 咀 嚼 」 這 句 話 ， 所 以 本 文 第 一 段 用了 literally 一 字 。 Literally 即 「 照 字 面 解 釋 」 、 「 並 非 比 喻 」 的 意 思 。 例 如 There are literally thousands of people 是 說 「 人 數 真 的 以 千 計 」 ， 並 無 誇 張。
