有一 首 英 文 歌 說 ： Now there's two less lonely people in the world （ 現 在 ， 世上 少 了 兩 個 寂 寞 的 人 ） 。 但 people 是 可 數 名 詞 （ countable noun ） ， 為 什 麼 用 less 而 不 用 fewer ？ 又 people 是 複 數 ， there 之 後 為 什 麼 用 is 而 不 用 are ？

按 few 和 little 都 是 說 「 少 」 ， 但 few 和 可 數 名 詞 連 用 ， little 則 和 不 可 數 名 詞 連用 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） There are few people in the street （ 街 上 的 人 寥 寥 可 數 ）。 （ 2 ） There is little time left （ 剩 下 的 時 間 不 多 了 ） 。 第 一 句 不 可 用 little 取 代 few ， 第 二 句 也 不 可 用 few 取 代 little 。

Few 、 little 的 比 較級 是 fewer 、 less 。 根 據 上 述 few 和 little 的 用 法 ， 那 句 英 文 歌 詞 自 然 應 改 為 Now there's two fewer lonely people in the world 。 不 過 ， less 一 字 有 點 特別 ： 非 正 式 英 文 常 以 less 取 代 fewer ， 和 複 數 名 詞 連 用 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） There are less men than women in Hong Kong （ 香 港 男 人 比 女 人 少 ） 。 （ 2 ） There are no less than 40 students in the class （ 班 學 生 不 少 於 四 十 人 ） 。 這 兩 句 的 less 文 法 上 都 應 改 為 fewer ， 但 less 是 通 俗 說 法 ， 隨 便 一 點 也 不 算 錯 。

至 於 「 There is + 複 數 名 詞 」 ， 也 是 通 俗 說 法 ， 嚴 格 而 言 應 改 為 are 。

A surgeon certainly would like to be well thought of by his or her colleagues （ 外 科 醫 生 當 然 都 想 同 事 對 他 有 好 印 象 ） 一 語 ， his or her 可 不 可 用 his 一 字 取 代 ？

傳 統 文 法 會 用 his 兼 言 男 女 ， 但 女 權 分 子 不 高 興 ， 所 以 今 天 一 般 用 their 取 代 his ， 文 法 雖 然 不 大 妥 當 ， 但 總 勝 過 累 贅 的 his or her 。
