「 緣 分 」 譯 做 fate 或 fatalism 可 不 可 以 ？

英 文 沒 有 「 緣 分 」 這 觀 念 ， 要 找 一個 同 義 詞 是 不 可 能 的 。 Fate 是 「 命 運 」 ， 含 義 比 「 緣 分 」 廣 ； fatalism 是 「 宿 命論 」 ， 而 且 常 帶 「 惡 運 難 逃 」 含 義 ， 和 「 緣 分 」 意 思 相 差 更 遠 ， 例 如 ： When the doctor told him that he had cancer, he accepted the news with an air of fatalism （ 醫 生 說 他 患 了 癌 症 ， 他 聽 後 ， 露 出 聽 天 由 命 的 神 氣 ） 。
然 則 「 緣分 」 怎 樣 翻 譯 ？ 竊 以 為 宜 按 文 意 用 字 。 宋 朝 呂 南 公 有 《 奉 答 顧 言 見 寄 新 句 》 說 ： 「更 使 襟 靈 憎 市 井 ， 足 知 緣 分 在 雲 山 。 」 俗 語 說 ： 「 有 緣 千 里 來 相 會 。 」 謹 把 這 兩 句翻 譯 於 後 ， 以 供 參 考 ： （ 1 ） With a strong dislike for worldly society, I understand that I was born to live in the cloudy mountains 。 （ 2 ） People fate wants to bring together will meet even though they are thousands of miles apart 。 Born to do something 即 「 生 來 注 定 做 某 事 」 ， 那是 一 種 緣 分 ； fate that brings people together 即 「 使 人 相 會 的 命 運 之 神 」 ，那 相 會 又 是 另 一 種 緣 分 。

The 一 般 用 來 指 前 文說 過 或 已 知 的 事 。 Three major battles 之 前 應 不 應 該 用 the ， 看 看 以 下 兩 句 應 該就 會 明 白 ： Three major battles were fought between Alexander the Great and the Persian Empire. The first of the three （ major ） battles was the battle of the Granicus 。
