During the US Civil War, the advent of winter saw an informal armistice between the Federal and Confederate armies. The pickets on both sides had become friendly, more given to trading than shooting one another at less than 100 yards. One afternoon, a Federal band came along and began playing the Northern patriotic war songs.

"Now give us some of ours!" shouted a Confederate picket. At once the music swelled into "Dixie", "My Maryland" and the "Bonnie Blue flag". Then, after a mighty cheer, and a slight pause, the band began again.

This time it was the tender, melting bars of "Home, Sweet Home". On both sides there were joyous shouts, and soon many wet eyes could be found among those hardy warriors under the two flags.

美 國 內 戰 期 間 ， 冬 季 來 臨 ， 南 北 兩 軍非 正 式 休 戰 。 雙 方 哨 兵 建 立 了 友 誼 ， 往 往 會 交 換 些 物 品 ， 而 不 是 向 一 百 碼 之 內 的 另一 方 開 槍 。 一 天 下 午 ， 北 軍 一 支 樂 隊 走 來 ， 演 奏 北 方 愛 國 軍 樂 。

一 個 南 軍 哨兵 喊 道 ： 「 奏 些 南 方 軍 樂 給 我 們 聽 吧 ！ 」 《 狄 克 西 》 、 《 我 的 馬 里 蘭 州 》 、 《 美 麗的 藍 旗 》 等 樂 曲 馬 上 雄 赳 赳 響 起 來 。 隨 後 是 一 陣 熱 烈 的 喝 采 聲 。 樂 隊 稍 停 一 下 ， 又開 始 演 奏 。

這 次 演 奏 柔 和 感 人 的 《 家 ， 可 愛 的 家 》 。 雙 方 軍 隊 都 發 出 歡 呼 聲 。 不 久 ， 南 北 軍 旗 下 那 些 剛 強 戰 士 很 多 都 熱 淚 盈 眶 。

【附 注 】 Advent 是 「 到 來 」 ， 常 指 重 要 人 物 、 事 件 等 來 臨 ， 例 如 the advent of World War Ⅱ 是 「 第 二 次 世 界 大 戰 降 臨 」 。 To be given to 是 「 有 某 種 傾 向 」 ，其 後 用 名 詞 或 動 名 詞 ， 例 如 ： He is given to daydreaming in class （ 他 常 常 上課 時 做 白 日 夢 ） 。
