After the US Civil War was over, all Confederate soldiers were required to take an oath of allegiance to the Union before they were allowed to become US citizens again. One day, a number of men were before Union General Benjamin Butler to take the oath. One of them looked at the General, and with a peculiar southern drawl said: "We gave you hell at Chickamauga, General !"

The General was furious and warned the soldier that failing to take the oath would result in him being shot. With some reluctance, the rebel obeyed. After taking the oath, he said, "General, I suppose I am a good Yankee and citizen of the United States now?"

"I hope so," the General replied in a fatherly tone.

"Well, General," the man said, "the rebels did give us hell at Chickamauga, didn't they ?"

美國 內 戰 結 束 後 ， 南 部 聯 盟 士 兵 都 要 宣 誓 效 忠 美 國 ， 才 可 以 再 度 成 為 美 國 公 民 。 有 一天 ， 一 些 士 兵 要 在 北 軍 將 領 班 傑 明 ． 巴 特 勒 面 前 宣 誓 ， 其 中 一 人 望 巴 特 勒 ， 以 特 別 的 南 方 腔 調 拉 長 聲 音 說 ： 「 將 軍 ， 奇 克 莫 加 河 一 役 ， 我 方 把 你 們 打 得 落 花 流 水 。 」

巴特 勒 非 常 憤 怒 ， 警 告 那 士 兵 說 ， 假 如 不 宣 誓 ， 就 會 被 槍 斃 。 那 士 兵 雖 然 聽 命 ， 但 有點 勉 強 ， 宣 誓 後 說 ： 「 將 軍 ， 我 現 在 應 該 可 以 算 是 個 好 的 北 軍 士 兵 和 美 國 公 民 了 吧？ 」

巴 特 勒 以 慈 父 的 口 吻 說 ： 「 希 望 如 此 。 」

那 士 兵 說 ： 「 嗯 ， 將 軍 ， 奇 克 莫 加 河 一 役 ， 那 些 叛 軍 把 我 們 打 得 落 花 流 水 ， 是 不 是 ？ 」

【 附 注 】 一 八 六 三 年 的 奇 克 莫 加 河 戰 役 ， 是 美 國 內 戰 中 南 軍 最 後 一 次 大 勝 。
